As an independently owned equine practice, every decision we make is guided by what is best for you and your horse not by corporate policies, targets or shareholders. We believe veterinary care should be personal, honest and built on long-term relationships, giving owners the confidence that they will see familiar faces and receive consistent, individualised care throughout their horse’s life.
Founded by Dr Hazel Birch-Ellis MRCVS, Ellis Equine combines referral-level experience with the accessibility and continuity of a local ambulatory practice. From routine preventative healthcare to advanced diagnostics, sports medicine, performance and rehabilitation, our aim is to deliver modern, evidence-based veterinary care directly to your yard.
We are proud to work closely with trusted farriers, physiotherapists, nutritionists, dentists and referral hospitals, creating a collaborative approach that places your horse’s welfare, performance and long-term welfare at the centre of every decision.
Whether your horse is an international athlete, a family pony, a happy hacker or a cherished retiree, you’ll receive the same thoughtful, honest and professional service that defines everything we do at Ellis Equine.

Veterinary Director and Veterinary Surgeon
Originally from Birmingham, Hazel graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, London, in 2020. Horses have always been at the centre of her life, spending much of her childhood riding, producing and backing young horses alongside her late father, whose surname inspired the name Ellis Equine. His passion for horses, quiet work ethic and commitment to doing things properly continue to shape the values of the practice today.
Hazel moved to her partners family farm near Ludlow before joining a busy ambulatory equine practice. She then travelled to Australia, where she worked at a specialist equine referral hospital, gaining advanced experience in equine medicine, surgery, anaesthesia and reproduction, including stallion management and embryo transfer. During her time in Australia, she also travelled extensively, working with leading sport horse, breeding, sales and racing yards.
On returning to the UK, Hazel joined the ambulatory team at Rossdales Equine Veterinary Surgeons. Working alongside internationally recognised specialists and certificate holders provided invaluable experience, while exposing her to many of the latest evidence-based treatment options available to horses today.
Ellis Equine was founded with a simple vision: to combine modern veterinary medicine with the personal service and continuity of care that owners value. Hazel believes every horse deserves an individual approach, whether they’re an elite competition horse, a much-loved leisure companion or a cherished retiree. By investing in advanced diagnostics, rehabilitation therapies and evidence-based treatments, the aim is to make high-quality ambulatory equine care more accessible to horse owners across the region.
Outside of veterinary practice, Hazel runs Ellissimo Sport Horses, a small breeding stud producing quality dressage horses. She enjoys producing and showing her youngstock, and when she’s not with horses, you’ll often find her helping Charlie with their pedigree Limousin cattle, although she admits the horses will always have her heart.
